Everyone knows the very famous Times Square and all the billboard advertisement which fills the area with bright lights and bold colours. But is it really worth advertising here? We know it has a huge footfall but does anyone really look and who's advertising here?
The sights are so overwhelming that even the first time I visted Times Square I took no interest in who or what was being advertised but more of the overall impact and taking photos. Looking back at these photos I am now seeing so much more of what was being advertised than when I was actually there. It costs anywhere between 1.1 million to 4 million pounds to advertise in Times Square. Making it one of the most expensive locations to advertise on a billboard in the world.
With a footfall of over 100 million people a year is it worth it? I personally think that creating an advert and having it put on tv or youtube is a more definite way of advertising a product to the right market, you can pick the correct times and the more chance of a consumer who would interested based off there likes.
I don't know how much attention people are paying to the advertisement in such a highly condensed overly stimulating visual environment. The only advertsiements I really looked at were those relevant to New York and possibly seeing a board way show.
The business insider have created a clear diagram illustrating how much a space on the one Times Square building.
I think there will always be a space for this kind of marketing and there are many positives to the space, bringing in a range of tourists and creating a general footfall for the area. But also lots of bonus's for the business's investing in the site due to the amount of coverage the area gets with photos, social media and on screen tv. Possibly making it more worth while for the brands?
I am still personally unsure how many people actually look and take in the brands and advertisement in Times Square, but its defienelty a huge popular area which is made up of the overall atheistic of the billboards and advertisement from all these brands. Essentially turning advertisement into art.
