After recently visiting Amsterdam, and heading over to the Body works museum. There was a really interesting section looking at how different countries eat and also how much they consumer on a average week from the supermarket.
Below are 9 different families, 9 different weekly food shops in 9 different countries.
In Italy they spend 179.99 EUR a week on food. There food really ranges, there is large amounts of carbohydrates, fruit and veg and fizzy drinks. It does look like a reasonably balanced diet. They don't seem to have a lot of packaging around the bread and fruit and veg so possibly bought from a local supermarket or market?.
In Australia this family spend 260.12 EUR on food, There diet is a highly protein diet, with the table being covered in mainly meat. There are a lot of sugary cereals and fizzy drinks lined up at the back.
In india, one weeks food for the Patkar family comes to 27.15 EUR. This is definitely one of the most colourful displays of food, with a large range of fruit and vegetables. They only have one bottle of fizzy drink on the table and hardly any plastic or branded packaging.
The family above are the Ukita family with one weeks worth of food. Some of there favourite foods are Sashimi, fruit, cake, potato chips. The food expenditure for one week is 219.53 EUR. This is one of the most highly packaged food shop, with a large range of branded and plastic products.
In Egypt the Ahmeds extended family with there weeks worth of food. There total comes to 47.36 EUR. This is one of the greenest tables with a large range of vegetables. meat and bread.
In Canada the Finken family poses with one weeks worth of food, It comes to 101.90 EUR . I personally thought that was reasonably cheap for what they bought, there is definitely less food on the table compared to some of the other countries. Again there a good range of fruit and vegetables and a few branded products in there too.
The Revis Family in the USA spend 236.90 EUR on food expenditure for one week, for 4 people, which is on average 59.25 EUR each. This again shows the most amount of plastic and packaging waste, aswell as the largest amount of food. There is a lot of meat and fizzy drunks, with a small range of fruit and vegetables.
What I found really interesting in this next family food was the amount of contrast of the huge range of fruit and vegetables but also fizzy drinks. There diet seems to mainly a plant based one with a small amount of chicken and crab, the food looks to be locally sourced with the lack of packaging. The Casales Family spend 130.98 EUR per week.
And finally in the Netherlands the Lesussinke Family spend 257 EUR per week on food, With there favourites being Peanut Butter, Jam, Cheese and Dutch Chocolate.
I found it really interesting looking at the different eating habits and diet of a range of different countries. Obviously this is only comparing one family per country and is only an idea of the general eating habits of that country as a whole.
