Is it rude to take selfies with memorials???

In New York ground zero is a famous memorial which is in honour of all the people that lost there lives in the terrible 9/11 attacks in America. The two twin towers were struck by hijacked planes and nearly three thousand people died. Some people jumped from the 110 storey buildings and others perished inside. Two separate planes hit the towers with 11 minutes between each attack, meaning the people in the opposing tower would have watched the chaos unfold before having there own tower fall beneath them. It was one of the biggest terrorist attacks in America's history and is a extremely well known place to list when in the USA.

This is what the memorial looks like today, both the towers foundations have been filled in with a waterfall drop which then falls into a never ending hole in the centre darkness. The sound of the slow running water and lights around the memorial make it a very moving place. Everything in New York slows down and everyone becomes a lot more calm and observant.

I have visited the memorial site before on my last visit to New York and both times I have seen numerous people taking selfies or pictures of themselves in front or leaning on the memorials. When you're taking a selfie its usually because you are some where of some stature and you want people to know about it. I took it as a celebrating or bragging about being to a place and that taking photos with yourself in is very unnecessary and very offensive.

A man was leaning on the edge where the names are placed, smiling as his family took his photo. I think taking a photo where numerous people have fallen to the death in the most tragic way is unsympathetic and rude. No one would ever just go and visit a hospital and then take a selfie in the corridors or by one of the rooms bragging about there location.

There are so many people who will have experienced and survived the attacks that want to come to the memorial as a place of memory and somewhere to remember those who died and don't need numbers of tourists with selfie sticks pushing there way to the front to go ahead and post it on Instagram.

I think in this current time with social media as it is, you have to be very careful to know where the line is and know where to stop. On this occasional in my opinion , people were going way too far.
