Gucci Cruise 2019 takes us way back to the old biblical times, a new twist and version of Noah’s Ark-inspired as a sequence of images. Featuring a whole host of animals. The images and short film were shot by Michele’s long-time collaborator, Glen Luchford.
The 2019 collection is an innovative take on a collection, the shots are edgy, powerful and quirky. The clothes are vivid and seemlessly fit in with there surroundings, something that you wouldn't expect from people boarding an ark full of a vast assortment of animals.
I am personally a atheist and have no biblical interest really, but this editorial sparks massively excitement within me. I think its the story being told using bright bold use of colours is hugely effective, from boarding the ark with the sun and vivid bright orange, yellows and reds. These colours are also repersented within the background and scene created using props and animals.
The Gucci bags and accessories bring a pop of colour to the brown tainted images, set with a glow of sepia tonal to each one of them.
The images feature numerous models, the ones that don't have a range of animals filling the space. The photos have been staged to link the animals and people together and they're mocking each other's behaviour. For example the model sat on the ark in a similar style to a monkey. Possibly hinting where we came from:? where we learnt our behaviour? or possibly how we just mock each other as part of our natural instinct and modern nature?. The images all flow together and create a storyboard of start to finish, starting from strach and ending up hitting the storm. The visual aspects in the images change to a darker atmosphere, the darker lighting, the models face on at the camera with peering eyes. The tones within the colours are darker and not as vibrant as before.
I think this is one of Gucci's more interesting editorial shoots and certainly caught my eye, mainly with there use of abstract casting ( the wild animals) and there colour palette and location standing out as extraordinary . They picked a story they knew everyone would recognise at first glance and be able to understand.
